Shopping when traveling offers an opportunity to interact with people of the local culture as well as a chance to return home with gifts and memories of your travels. The Holy Land is known for offering memorable items made of stone, pottery, glass, clay, olive wood, cloth, leather and more. Many of the items are available online and can be shipped in time for Christmas if you order soon. To make the most of your shopping experience while touring the Holy Land, here are a few tips.

First, currency seldom matters. You will see prices in Israeli Shekels as well as US Dollars and you can purchase items in most shops in either currency. They can also point you in the direction of a local money changer who can offer a fair exchange rate.

Second, the closer you are to major tourist sites, the higher the prices will be. Think of this as a convenience fee paid by those who do not venture into the lesser traveled places. As you move “off the beaten path,” you are more likely to find better deals. Take time to shop around and you can quickly learn the average pricing for most items.

Third, be conscious for how the item you are considering to buy was made. If it was made by an artist, then you are likely to pay more because of the item’s uniqueness and the time and detail applied by the artist. More typical items that are found in many places will be priced lower. Ask the shop owner where the item was made, and most will show you the difference between handmade, machine made and imported items from China.

Certain cities and regions are known for its work, for example:

Hebron Glass refers to glass produced in the City of Hebron as part of a flourishing art industry established in the city during Roman rule in Palestine. Hebron’s Old City still contains a quarter named the “Glass-Blower Quarter” and Hebron glass continues to serve as a tourist attraction for the city.

When traveling to Israel and Palestine, the Dead Sea is one of the top destinations for visitors as well as Dead Sea Beaches, Masada, Eni Gedi Nature Reserve, and Qumran.

About the Dead Sea

The Dead Sea has attracted visitors from around the world for centuries because of the minerals in the water. It is a natural health spa. The Dead Sea is the lowest elevation on land at – 997 feet or -304 meters. It is also 9.6 times saltier than the ocean at 34.2% salt or 342g/kg. The Dead Sea is 31 miles or 50 kilometers long and 9 miles or 15 kilometers wide at its widest point. It lies in the Jordan River Valley on the border with Israel, Palestine and Jordan.[1]

The siege of Masada was one of the final events in the First Jewish–Roman War, occurring from 73 to 74 CE on a large hilltop and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Herod the Great built palaces for himself on the mountain and fortified Masada between 37 and 31 BCE. According to Josephus, the siege of Masada by troops of the Roman Empire at the end of the First Jewish–Roman War ended in the mass suicide of 960 people, the Sicarii rebels and their families hiding there. It is also an archaeological site of great significance. The remains of Herod’s palaces are outstanding and very intact examples of this type of architecture, whilst the untouched siege works are the finest and most complete anywhere in the Roman world. The property is managed by the Israel Nature and Parks Authority, in cooperation with the Israel Antiquities Authority. An important aspect of the current management plan is the decision to carry out no further research excavation on the main site “in the present generation”, although limited excavation will be permitted when required by conservation, maintenance or restoration projects.

In the Old Testament of the Bible, David, fleeing from King Saul, hides in the strongholds at Ein Gedi (1 Samuel 23:29 and 24:1-2) and Saul seeks him “even upon the most craggy rocks, which are accessible only to wild goats” (1 Samuel 24:2). Ein Gedi is also referenced in Psalm 63, subtitled a Psalm of David when he was in the wilderness of Judah, and has been associated with David’s sojourn in the desert of Ein Gedi.

Today Ein Gedi is a Nature Reserve offering beautiful hiking with opportunities to see wild life such as Ibex and rare trees (brochure). In order to reduce the impact of the mass of visitors on the nature reserve, a network of trails was arranged, and an entrance fee began to be charged back in the 1970s. In this way, some areas have been left undisturbed for the flora and fauna.

Since the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in 1947–1956, extensive excavations have taken place in Qumran. Nearly 900 scrolls were discovered. Most were written on parchment and some on papyrus. Cisterns, Jewish ritual baths, and cemeteries have been found, along with a dining or assembly room and debris from an upper story alleged by some to have been a scriptorium as well as pottery kilns and a tower.

Many scholars believe the location was home to a Jewish sect, probably the Essenes. But, according to Lawrence Schiffman, the rules of the community, its heavy stress on priesthood and the Zadokite legacy, and other details indicate a Sadducean-oriented sect either distinct from or one of the various Essene groupings. [1]

Today, the Qumran Park offers an exhibition of archaeological items, and presentation of the history of Qumran. You can visit the archaeological site and see the buildings that have been uncovered at Qumran offering evidence of a communal lifestyle. The path passes through meeting rooms, a central dining room (refectory) in which ceremonial meals were held, the remains of a kitchen, watchtower, pottery workshops, and stables.

As you can tell, there is much to see and experience in Israel and Palestine. One could easily spend a week in the Dead Sea relaxing, hiking and touring.
But what about the lesser known holy sites, the unique, special places that offer a more quite encounter with the holy? Below are three places you may want to ask your tour guide or company to visit on your next trip to the Holy Land.

St. George’s Monastery in the Valley of the Shadow of Death – A cliff-hanging complex carved into a sheer rock wall in the Judean Desert, overlooking an unexpectedly lush garden with olive and cypress trees, is one of the most striking sights of the Holy Land.

The Mount of Olives is one of three hills to the east of Jerusalem and is the location of many biblical events. In the Old Testament, 2 Samuel 15:30, King David fled Jerusalem over the Mount of Olives to escape when his son Absalom rebelled. In the New Testament, Jesus often travelled over the Mount of Olives on the 40-minute walk from the Temple to Bethany.

The Mount of Olives is the location of several major sites for visitors. They include:

Among Holy Land sites, the Sea of Galilee has changed comparatively little since Jesus walked on its shores and recruited four fishermen as his first disciples. Jesus made the fishing town of Capernaum the center of his itinerant ministry in Galilee, using the lake, its boats and its shores to spread his Good News. He calmed a storm; he walked on the water and probably even swam in the lake. Local sites include:

• Mount of Beatitudes
• Mount Tabor
• Bethsaida

Identified as the birthplace of Jesus since the 2nd century, a church was first completed there in 339 A.D. and the edifice that replaced it after a fire in the 6th century retains elaborate floor mosaics from the original building. The site also includes Latin, Greek Orthodox, Franciscan and Armenian convents and churches, as well as bell towers, terraced gardens and a pilgrimage route. Key places to see:

Every year, pilgrims and visitors descend on the Mount of Olives to see the Major Holy Sites and experience the places where Jesus walked, prayed and met with people and his disciples.

The Mount of Olives is one of three hills to the east of Jerusalem and is the location of many biblical events. In the Old Testament (2 Samuel 15:30) King David fled Jerusalem over the Mount of Olives to escape when his son Absalom rebelled. In the New Testament, Jesus often travelled over the Mount of Olives on the 40-minute walk from the Temple to Bethany

If you have arranged your trip with the aid of a tour company such as Aeolus Tours, the tour company will arrange for your ground transportation from the airport to your hotel and beyond. Often this is a Charter Bus with air-conditioning and Wi-Fi access. This is often the most comfortable ride available since you sit up high and see over other vehicles. Busses also offer reclining seats in case you need to nap. Prices range from 2,100 to 3,000 INS per trip, or less if you hire the bus for your entire stay in Israel and Palestine.

Catching a cab outside the arrival area at the airport is the easiest ground transportation to arrange and should cost you between 300 and 400 NIS or New Israeli Scheckel. Make sure to get NIS currency inside the airport. There are multiple ATMs as well as a money changing station in the arrival area. Check the exchange rate on line. Also, do not get in the cab till you reach a price for the ride. Check to see if the cab can go into Bethlehem or just to the checkpoint. If they cannot go in, you can catch another cab for 20-30 NIS that will take you to your hotel or Church of the Nativity. You may also want to share a taxi with someone to lower the cost per person.

The rail system in Israel is good and there is a station in Terminal 3 at the airport. The ticket should cost your 15 to 20 NIS per person. The train cars are air-conditioned and offer comfortable seating, but the seats do not recline. From the airport station, take the train to the Jerusalem-Malha station which makes the trip every hour or so. The trip will take about 90 minutes. Once you arrive at the Jerusalem, you can catch a cab to Bethlehem for a 30-40 NIS. Again, make sure you set the price for the ride before you get in the cab.

There is no direct bus from Tel Aviv to Bethlehem but you can go from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem then transfer to the bus to Bethlehem. From Tel Aviv, take the 405 bus from the central bus station or the 480 from the terminal next to Tel Aviv Savidor Merkaz (Central) railway station to Jerusalem. Both depart every 10-15 minutes and will take you to the Jerusalem central bus station. Once in Jerusalem, it’s a short cab ride to Bethlehem which should cost between 30-50 NIS. Note that public transport in Israel doesn’t run from late afternoon on Fridays until after dark on Saturdays.
