Archaeology and the Holy Land
It has been said that one cannot dig a hole in the Holy Land without finding some artifact from a previous civilization. What are some of the current archaeological projects underway in Palestine and Israel? Here are a three you might want to visit on your next trip to the Holy Land.
The Tomb of Lazarus, Bethany
This video clip tells about restoration efforts and classes being taught at the excavation area at the Tomb of Lazarus. Palestinian workers and restorers are learning the secrets of restoration by Italian experts in the field, thanks to the project of ATS Pro Terra Sancta.
The Church of the Nativity
Since its establishment through a presidential mandate in 2008, the Presidential Committee for the Restoration of the Church of the Nativity has been responsible for providing an umbrella for the restoration works of the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. A great amount of work has been complete including the roof, windows, the Narthex, wall mosaics, and external facades.
One can see the work that has been done when you visit the Church of the Nativity. The following video clip shows some of the accomplishments.
The Herodium
The History Channel visited the Palace of Herod the Great, just outside of Bethlehem and produced the following video showing the current archaeological site and how it might have looked during the time of Herod.
